Webquest still rocking!

Webquests, Webquests....why they are so "inn" until today. Bernie Dodge, a professor of educational technology at San Diego State University, has been cited by eSchool News as one of the nation's top 30 educational technology innovators. The idea is so simple, I wonder why I did not come up with that first!....When I used it in my doctoral level classes, my students love it!. It was so popular for k-12 students, why doctoral students cannot benefit from it!...and they did!. I created for students to learn to reiew a research paper. I have used successfully, and my doctoral students claimed they have learned a lot from it. if you are curious you can check it out at http://www.internationalprofessor.com/9804/mock2.html
Do you have a great webquest to show? I would love to see it!

On the Introduction page, scroll down to see two great videos that introduce the idea of the atom.

On the Process page, I added links to different PDF files depending on the role each student chooses. I think this way the task is more organized and easier to navigate. This is also where I linked to my own PowerPoint presentation.

On the Conclusion page, I inserted links that the students can click on to learn more about future lessons. I also embedded "The Atom Song" video at the bottom.

I hope you find this webquest informational and enjoyable!

This WebQuest is for a 6th grade elementary class. You can find my PowerPoint link under the first title in Process. I have also included many different links for students to search on the internet and find answers to questions as part of their project.

Although not a requirement, I have included a Teacher Page at the end of my WebQuest that includes credits, and the NYS Social Studies standards. I hope you enjoy this WebQuest and learn something about Ancient Rome!

I have never heard of webquests before now. I found it very interesting searching and looking at others webquests. There are so many out there and no two are alike. I can't believe with so many out there that I never heard of them before!

I had a lot of fun making my webquest. I like how I was able to include links at the bottom of the page for the students to use in their research. I wish I had more time to research other websites and "play around" with mine. There is so much to do with these that there really are endless possiblities. I am definitely going to make many more of these and make each one different and uniques. I liked the whole process of making it. Hope you enjoy my webquest!

For this webquest, the students need to take one of William Shakespeare's plays (from a list) and turn it into a modern movie. The students have four roles: writer, casting, art, and music. Each member is responsible for certain parts of the project. The writer needs to rewrite a scene from the play to make it modern and fit their movie. The casting director needs to cast actors/actresses for the main characters as well as write a small summary of Shakespeare's life. Art needs to design a poster and a DVD cover, as well as write a short summary of the movie. Music needs to pick four songs for the movie and write why the songs were chosen and at what part of the movie will they play.

Each page includes a different picture relevant to William Shakespeare. The Resources page has several links to websites about William Shakespeare as well as websites that will help each student with their specific part. The Resources page also includes a PowerPoint about William Shakespeare which has text, pictures, links, and movies to help the students learn about William Shakespeare.--This is posted in behalf of Memonagan.

Although not required, I did do the Teacher's Page. I think it is helpful to point out that the Common Core Standards are and what I would like the fourth graders to be able to do by the end of the assignment.

I am a big believer in giving students choices to let them have more control of their learning. That is why I let students pick their groups, pick their task, and pick their role. This can always be adjusted if I think a student cannot handle this. I provided 2 different tasks, with 3 different roles each. This proved to be more work, but I think it would be worth it.

Since there are 2 tasks and 3 roles each, I have included 6 separate rubrics so students can see what is expected specifically for each role. I have also included documents giving students step by step instructions on how to do their work. I had to upload them as documents because it was too long for the website. (The website was only showing the first half.)

I hope you enjoy my WebQuest!

I enjoyed doing this webquest because I thought learning about Groundhog Day would be fun and interesting to elementary students. However, I didnt know I would have to add the common core state standards. After I completed the entire webquest, this was when I discovered this, so I thought I was in trouble. However, fortunately, I found that students must know about the history of the United States and its traditions. Groundhog Day is an awesome tradition that has been passed down and we celebrate it every February 2nd. So with that being said, I'm excited again about making this webquest. I really liked incorporating the videos onto the webquest because students can see an actual animal making a prediction about our weather. It's crazy, but fun!

I really hope you enjoy my WebQuest!!!

I really enjoyed completing this webquest because it was something different and it was interesting to learn about webquests because I have never done one before. It was an easy process as well. President's Day is more than just the normal February break or a three day weekend, it is about honoring our President's. I felt this was something different that the students probably have never seen before and it is always beneficial to incorporate different types of technology. I also like how you can make the webquest simple or complex. I am looking forward to introducing this topic in the classroom and I hope the student's enjoy it. I hope you enjoy it too!!!

I can see this Webquest is a challenging one. You are asking a 4-5 grader to create a law. It will be very interesting and maybe a nice surprise to learn their responses. I see this Webquest is prepare to work alone, but you can make changes in the future to include a group activity as well. Great informative webs quest!

    LINK to PowerPoint: http://www.authorstream.com/Presentation/bobre2020-1848566-potsdam-decision-drop-bomb/

PowerPoint is also included in Introduction Page of WebQuest, both as an attachment & a link to Authorstream.

The Decision to Drop the Bomb on Japan

When Harry Truman learned of the success of the Manhattan Project, he knew he was faced with a decision of unprecedented gravity. The capacity to end the war with Japan was in his hands, but it would involve unleashing the most terrible weapon ever known.

American soldiers and civilians were weary from four years of war, yet the Japanese military was refusing to give up their fight. American forces occupied Okinawa and Iwo Jima and were intensely fire bombing Japanese cities. But Japan had an army of 2 million strong stationed in the home islands guarding against invasion.

For Truman, the choice whether or not to use the atomic bomb was the most difficult decision of his life.

This WebQuest explores the depth as well as the gravity of this decision, and allows students to develop critical thinking skills during the learning process.

I really enjoyed creating this webquest. One thing I would like you to note is that in the introducation section I included the link to my Power Point on ecosystems as a review for the students before they begin the webquest. Originally I was having problems viewing the slideshow because authorstream distorted some of the slides including pictures when I originally uploaded it. I have since revised the Power Point and the revised one is the one that is linked to my web quest.

I would also like you to note that the students will be given different roles and designated ecosystems before they begin the webquest. If this was an online class the students were working in, the teacher may email the students their role and ecosystem, along with the contact information of others who will be working on the same ecosystem. If this is an offline class, the students would receive their assignments in the classroom before being sent off to work on the computers.

I really enjoy creating this webquest. I included my powerpoint at the bottom of my webquest. I thought that the jobs I gave the students would be fun for students at such a young age. They learn about the jobs and the sounds that the animals make and they will help the animals to find there way. I also thought it would be important for the parents to get involved in this project as well. The students cannot do this all by themselves so, the students parents would need to be involved so that it can be completed. The students would need constant supervision from an adult to complete these tasks.

  14. For my webquest I introduced the topic of the industrial revolution with supporting video, website links, photos, and supplemental materials. I really enjoy webquests and will have to work on channeling my inner creative and artistic means to further work on and enhance them. They can be a lot of fun and I think extremely educational for students. I have added my powerpoint to the introduction as well since the powerpoint will provide supplemental and background information leading to the industrial revolution. I added a fun interactive introduction video done by students and then added materials and links that would direct students to core information. I provided students with objectives and questions along with a mini quiz to track their progress along the way. All in all I think the students would be able to find the information they need along with having a fun and engaging time looking through the information.
    Thanks
    Rick

One thing I would like to note is that I have included the link to my Power Point at the bottom of the introduction page. Also I included the butterfly song and video at the end of the webquest. Submitted is my webquest on the Hydrologic Cycle. I designed the webquest to be used when I cover the topic in my Earth Science class. I wanted the work to be individual, so the students who miss class, which happens often, could complete the task at home. I have posted my PowerPoint on authorstream, but is not the source for the webquest. The PowerPoint, in the introduction page, is slow to download, but not distorted as is on authorstream. This webquest will be a follow up lesson, after classroom lesson. Please note that I have used video for instruction, and used a video to appeal to my student body, which enforces the material covered. Additionally, I limited the websites, do to my student body, and attention issues.

Overall, I do appreciate the experience of the webquest, and plan to incorporate more of the same in the future. I feel that the webquest do need to follow a sequence of events, but still be tailored to the students body, being special education, general education, or honors; what is your thought on this point? Does my webquest meet the parameter being more tailored to particular student body, such as special needs? Any feed back is appreciated. Best Always

Some students with learning disabilities can certainly flow the idea, but It will depend of their particularly disability. For example, there is certain techniques to make a webpage accessible for blind students such as http://www.afb.org/info/accessibility/creating-accessible-websites/23

My WebQuest is an exploration for a kindergarten class into the weather seasons. The students are pretending to help a research team determine the different seasons, the weather patterns of each season, and what type of clothing people should wear in each season. The students will be broken up into groups of four and will each have a different role. The students roles will be in forms of the four different seasons. Together, the students must research their chosen season and complete a poster board of the four seasons that will help the research team answer their questions about the seasons.

  21. My WebQuest is helping students to work on finding out about the different musical eras while also coming together as a team. They are required to do work on their own and are held responsible for their own work but they need to come together successfully to do their final letter to the teacher. The students were broken up into groups of 5 and each was assigned their own musical era. This made sure that each student had their own era in their group and each group had all 5 musical eras.

My webquest is an exploration for a 9th/10th grade social studies class. The students will be put into groups of four and will create a poster board collage of Rosa Parks. The students will work together on the quest activities in the quest and when they are finished they will present it to the class. Each student will take a different quest activity of the collage and present it to the class. After doing this together in a group effort, the students will have a better understanding of Rosa Parks, who she was, what she stood for, her accomplishments and why she refused to give her seat up to a white man on the bus.

My WebQuest is an exploration for a 3rd grade class. It can be used in ELA or Social Studies. The student will be put into groups of four to prepare a presentation for a debate about which Native American tribe is the best. I call it "Battle of the Tribes." Students are required to choose a Native American tribe, then each student will research a different aspect of that tribe. The students will then come together to discuss and prepare a presentation of their choice. Once all groups have completed their presentations, they will partake in a debate to defend their tribe. They are expected to be active listeners and ask questions and make statements to defend their tribes.

  25. My WebQuest was designed for a 4th grade class. The topic is the water cycle. For this activity, the students would be broken up into groups of four. Each member of the group would research a different part of the water cycle (Precipitation, Condensation, Evaporation, Run Off/Collection). The students would work independently when exploring all of the websites I provided. They would record information found on the sites that pertained to their role. Then the group would come together and discuss what they each learned. The important parts of each aspect of the water cycle would be included in the final poster.

The final project would be presented in front of the class, we would then have our posters on display for other students to view. I incorporated an additional website (an interactive game) on the "Conclusion" portion of the WebQuest, which I thought would be fun for the students. The WebQuest was designed to take about 2-4 days, but could be altered for the class.

My WebQuest is geared towards 6-8 grades. This WebQuest which is about bullying should take anywhere from 1-2 weeks depending on how much time you give the students to work on it per day. Students are going to be broken up according to the type of bullying they choose. Students are going to research their topics as if they are going to be interviewed on the school news show about their topics, after the research they will create a PowerPoint as well as a flyer that must highlight the important parts. I chose a flyer as well because I want students to be able to edit themselves when it comes to the important parts of information. After they finish their PowerPoints they will come back and share with the class on a mock news show that we will create in the classroom. I feel like a mock news show just helps the students interact but as well they gain the information from others through the eyes of someone else their age which I think is great.

  27. My WebQuest was designed for a 1st grade class. The WebQuest is learning all about the different penguins as the students have learned in the PowerPoint. Students will be paired in groups of two and will be assigned a penguin to research. The students will be pretending to be penguins and they are learning about their family history. During their research they will be organizing their information into a graphic organizer, researching poems, making a page to put into a book and making a life-size penguin.

The students are expected to learn to work together and be able to present their information to the class. The students should be able to navigate the Internet without the assistance of the teacher. The WebQuest should take a week to finish given the students ages.

Students will be working independently on the WebQuest but they will have a partner to discuss any questions with if they are confused. The students are told that plants are dying around the world and they are acting as scientist. They are to figure out the different plant parts and their functions and to stop the plants from dying and save the earth of its oxygen supply!

The students will complete the activities and the quiz. Student will also be completing a poster which will be hung around the classroom. This WebQuest is designed to take about 2-3 days to finish which depends on the students in the classroom, some student may need longer than others.
