Useful Websites for Teaching

As an educators we are always looking for good info to use in our classes. Sometimes we create our own lessons, or sometimes we use others --for example-- videos prepared for others teachers or organizations. I believe that a good teacher should be able to look for the resources he/she needs as well as create her/his own. For example for videos you can go to: http://www.teachertube.com http://youtube.com https://www.teachingchannel.org/ https://www.khanacademy.org/ There are so many websites, and depending on the topic, teachers should find the ones are useful for their classes. You can google them, ask them or use your favorite search engine. Which ones are your favorities?

  1. Some of my favorite websites for teachers and students include: www.pbs.org/teachers, historychannel.com/teachers, brainpop.com, and http://exchange.smarttech.com. PBS and the History channel are good websites (I think) for looking up educational videos and interactive activities. Brain pop is an excellent site for students to watch videos, read articles, and take quizzes either as a class or independently on a variety of subjects. SMART Exchange is a website where teachers can post their own SMART Board lessons, borrow other teacher's lessons, or look for inspiration for their own lessons. For a search engine, I usually use Google.

After reading the Introduction to Teaching and Learning, I am looking forward to learning about more programs and tools I can use in my classroom, especially Microsoft Office. I have used word and Power Point before, so I am most interested in learning how to use Excel for data management. I think this will come in handy when assessing and testing students, and will also be helpful with providing evidence for the APPR standards.

    1. Sarah, good choice of websites. for those who are not yet familiar with Smartboads: The SMART Board is an interactive, computerized white board that is connected to the teacher’s computer and all that is inside. It can be operated from the computer, or by touching the board itself with a fingertip or wand. The exchange.smarttech.com has a wealth of info for people who are using smart boards. Smart boards little by little are becoming popular in the schools and colleges. They were first introduced in 1991!

  2. One of the aspects of love from teaching is being able to be creative and implementing my own ideas as well as finding some good resources online that I can implement in my classroom. Although it can sometimes be time consuming, I truly enjoy finding things that I can teach to my students. I'm not yet a permanent teacher, however in my past experiences in the classroom, while student teaching, and now being an assistant teacher, I'm always online looking for things to be able to incorporate in the learning environment. I agree with Sarah D, I love the website brainpop.com. It's absolutely wonderful! it has videos for anything and everything. Before I did lessons while student teaching, I often used brainpop to show the cartoon video on a topic I was doing. After doing the lesson, I would sometimes refer back to brainpop to do a short quiz to assess the students' knowledge. Also another website I truly enjoy is PPPST.com This stands for Pete's PowerPoint Station and this website is WONDERFUL for using powerpoints on EVERY topic you can think of. Ofcourse you can choose what powerpoint you would want to show your students and they have other resources such as games to assess the students' learning. These are only a few of the many resources I used in the classroom and there are just so much more out there.

    1. Samantha. I complete forgot about the PPPST.com, I recommended before and I lost track of it. It seems very nice, and have a lot of options now!I can see they have books now that include the powerpoint presentation with it. I also think that when the resources are tight with the standards make teachers decision easier.

  3. There are so many different websites that can be implemented into the classroom for lessons and for interactive and educational use. Each website has a different approach towards learning and serves many of different purposes. There are websites that are informational and ones that are interactive. This helps with student involvement as well in, which I love. There are many of different sites in which I love to use with the students and for my own use are Apples4theteacher.com, Coolmath.com, brainpopjr.com, starfall.com, myeducationstuff.com and the list can keep going. Applesfortheteacher has different lessons and worksheets that can be implemented into the classroom and it also has different themes for each month. Coolmath is a great website for improving math skills and the students enjoy it. Brainpopjr is perfect for the elementary students because of the interactive videos and there are many of different topics that can be implemented into the classroom by using this website and they are appropriate for each grade level. Starfall has many of reading activities and interactive reading books especially for emergent readers. Myeducationstuff focuses on phonics; sight words and has plenty of reading resources for the student and teacher. I have found these websites helpful in the past while working with children. I definitely agree with Samantha and Sarah on their selection of websites especially brainpop because the students enjoy it since it is a cartoon but it is also educational.
After reading the introduction, I am looking forward to learning how to enhance my learning as well as the students. I am also looking forward to implementing more technology into the classroom and learning about how technology can relate to my teaching and the curriculum.

    1. Justine yes, there is a wealth of sites that can provide great materials for teachers!. Sometimes we don't know which of the materials is effective for our students. There is also website dedicate to evaluate those materials. I found that in the case of software for children, for example, the new Zealand department of education supports this site http://softwareforlearning.tki.org.nz/ . It is great site that discusses and evaluate educational software.

  6. I found that the chapter in the book "What's This All About" was very interesting. The software that we will be learning about in this book is very important to learn how to use. No matter how many times you use it, you can learn new things every time. I use Microsoft Office so much and I feel like I learn something new every time. I have used it since high school and all throughout college and when a professor asked us to do something with it, I had to look up information as to how to use it. There are so many different features to use and it is important to know how to use it all. I am looking forward to learning new things and being able to use them in my own classroom. These students today are all about technology and when you can get them to interact with what they are learning about, you can get their attention much easier. When you can use what they love to use everyday to help them to learn, they will become more intrigued and will remember what they have actually learned.

  7. There are a numerous amount of websites out there that are used by teacher’s everyday in the classrooms. Many of which are very interactive as well as educational which is a bonus because they can help students be more involved with their learning. With each website that is out there, I feel that each different website has set forth its own purpose with regards towards learning. There are a number of different sites in which I love to use for myself as well as for the students. Some of which include Enchantedlearning.com, brainpopjr.com, Edhelper.com, Teachers.net, Apples4fortheteacher.com, and the list can keep going. Enchanted learning has different worksheets that you can download mini-books, units, and much more. Much of the information on this website can be implemented into the classroom and is especially great for the younger kids. Brainpopjr is a wonderful site for the elementary students. There is such a wealth of information on this site ranging from topics in Science, Social Studies, and Math. This site not only contains videos that the students can watch but homework help, games and even activities that the students can do. Edhelper has different lessons, monthly themes, and worksheets. 11. I viewed https://www.teachingchannel.org/videos/middle-school-vocabulary-development?fd=1. Vocabulary is allows a difficult task because students have a hard time remembering what the word means and retaining that information. Having a group give hints about the word, such as the first and last letter, how many syllables and then the definition, not only helps them to understand the word and get used to the idea of syllable (because many, a lot older, students still don't quite understand how to recognize syllables) and use a deeper level of thinking that correlates with common core. They are using these clues to pull back the information they have learned and going back to the text to remember what the word is. The teacher in the video didn't allow them to refer back to the text and I both like and dislike this approach. I like it because it doesn't become a searching game, they have to actually remember the main points from the text and pull that knowledge back out. I dislike this approach because the students will find this very difficult, especially if they didn't understand, nor pay attention to the text. Depending on the text and how well they are familiar with the text...that would determine if I let the refer back to the text.

    1. Michelle, God points. It was very interesting seeing Ms. Langlois strategy of pre-teaching vocabulary. Thanks for sharing. A few days ago, I asked two teachers their opinion of flash cards to learn vocabulary for SAT exams. Their opinions where different of each other. One (English Teacher) was in favor; the Other (Counselor) was against. Both have valid reasons, the English Teacher believes that any kind of practice is good. The Counselor believes that buying flash card was not useful, and better let the students to prepare their own cards. My daughter dislike flash cards, and the true, is that I have never used one when I was a student.
Now, the video that you show it is not about flash cards, but it is a similar technique. I also dislike as you, the fact, that students are not allow to review it. However, some students may like the challenge. It is about differentiate instruction.

  12. As part of session two, here are five useful websites that I use and will use in the future. readwritethink.org has really great lessons that I can mold for certain English lessons. sparknotes.com is also helpful when teaching a book. I often go to that website to read more about the characters and see what questions they ask. This helps me when creating study guide questions. youtube.com is another one that I often use. While I was teaching Hamlet, I found a Linken Park song (with lyrics) to help the students relate to Hamlet's character by using a song that showed those emotions. superteacherworksheets.com is a great site I use while subbing. When subbing, there are many times when there is still 10 minutes left in the period and I need a filler. They have worksheets according to grade and subject. Englishgrammarsecrets.com is a great website for me. Grammar is probably the hardest part of teaching English. This site helps me brush up on my grammar skills and gives me ideas for lessons.
