Academic Analytics: the uses of information management in higher education

Accreditation in higher education is a collegial process based on self and peer assessment for public accountability and improvement of academic quality. If you would like to learn about the nuts and bolts, I would advise you ,to begin reading The council for Higher Education Administration (CHEA) have published an excellent “accreditation toolkit”. http://www.chea.org/accreditation_toolkit/accreditation_toolkit.pdf ] Technology has played a big part. Faculty and administrators have used several apps, software and web-based programs to support, not only their reports, but to collect data for accountability. The major section is to collect student evidence of learning. During the last year, my knowledge of technology has been my ally. I have created reports for accreditation institutions, have review my students learning status, also have used to improve my lessons. I am constantly looking for the “new thing” that can make my life easier either with assessment reports or my lessons. There are several software’s that supports teaching and assessment. Diane Oblinger (2012) presented several options in her presentation in Educase 2012 Accreditation in higher education is a collegial process based on self http://www.chea.org/pdf/2014_Presentations/Oblinger%20PowerPoint%20Presentation.pdf In the last decade, Higher Education administrators have looked for web-based resources that help with their projects. This is in the section of academic analytics. In the business world, we have called it, Business Intelligence. It is how we use the technology in education. Academic analytics comprises several technologies. These are used in the seven key areas of higher education: Advancement and fundraising, business and finances, budget and planning, institutional research, research administration, and academic affairs. Mostly used in extraction and analysis of data (~50% of academic analytics are used in this area), are analysis and monitoring of operational performance (~18 %) and decision making (5%). How would you explain what you use or someone you know, is using technology in any of the key areas of higher education? Would you mention what kind of technology are you using? (i.e. tableausoftware, taskstream, etc).

  1. HVCC uses Banner Unified Digital Campus

and HVCC Health Services use a banner student module for immunization management called SPAYIMM. A keys in students immunizations such has MMR(2) , Meningitis, Hepatits A, Hep B , Varicella, we also document TB ( 2 steps for Health Science students) , Tetanus status and Meningitis self reporting form. All this data Can be queried daily through banworx_sppyimh. this daily query allow health service to keep track of how many immunization holds were removed. how many immunization holds are in place and how many are added daily allowing health service to send correspondance indicating what's missing giving student adequate time to met NYState mandates in the process avoiding being disenrolled. Banner makes the process of managing immunization for 12000 students manageable with 2 people.

Amazing really . Enclosed below are the header on the report. I removed students information(FERPA, FERPA,FERPA)

  2. It is amazing how technology have easier our lives!, wow 12,000 people by only two people controlling the operation.
I used forms in the Symposium so the presenters can submit their papers via form. Technology made my life easier.

  3. Three key resources Stony Brook University uses are Google Apps for Education, Qualtrics and Peoplesoft (SOLAR). Google Apps Education provides students and faculty easy access to creating documents, spreadsheets, surveys and e-mail. Assessment is largely coordinated using Qualtrics, a very easy to use website that allows you to create surveys and provides you with easy to understand reports on the data collected. Peoplesoft manages the day to day information for over 24,000 students on the campus. The system holds the information and alerts the appropriate people as to what data needs updating or is missing. An example of this is how the Undergraduate Colleges coordinate registration for first year students. Each of the six first year colleges obtains a report which indicates student placement scores, intended major, immunization status, commuter/resident status and virtually any other data sets you want to extract. There is no doubt that the technology exists to promote academic excellence.

  5. I believe that incorporating technology in the classroom can only benefit students learning. The presentation link that you posted in your blog stated that 98% of students own a digital device (“Where Quality Assurance and Information Technology Meet,” Oblinger). The use of technology in a classroom can provide students with a positive way to engage with it in a way that will promote learning. Students will use technology regardless if teachers decide to use it in the classroom. However, I believe that we should teach students the correct way to use it learning. Students who are assigned to do a research project no longer go to a library to look up information they go straight to the Internet. There are places online with great reliable resources and some that cannot be trusted. By using technology in the classroom, we can help students determine the differences between reliable and unreliable Internet resources. The amount of projects, learning, research, videos, and other technologies that can be used in a classroom are growing. It is our job as educators to stay up to date and integrate the new ways of learning into the classroom.

  6. I also believe that incorporating technology in the classroom is probably one of the smartest things as educators and teachers we can do for our students in today's technology based world. There are so many different areas of technology that we can learn from and help our students grow. I really like the part in your blog about business intelligence. This helps with advancements and fundraising, budget and planning, business and finances. All of us are not geniuses so the technology will guide us through the mischief of it all. Books are still relevant I feel- but knowing that you can use technology where it is more exciting and engaging for the students- instead of them daydreaming and playing on their phones- is a total weight off our shoulders. I feel that it is very important for us as teachers and educators to learn about the most up to date technology so we can teach our students and help them grow for the future. Today there is so much material to be taught and learned that kids will zone out from a boring lecture and if technology is incorporated in the classroom they will definitely benefit from it.

  7. I believe that using technology in the classroom is not only a wise decision but also very necessary at this point in time. The students that we as teachers have in our classrooms come from such a technologically advanced time. It is also important as a teacher to make sure that you are able to reach all types of students. So many students in this day and age have been diagnosed with some type of learning disability and to be able to teach to a diverse set of students is the most useful for the students. Some students may just learn better to be hands on or to be able to type. This is not to say that students should only be using laptops or tablets but in the learning environment you can teach the students to be responsible with the technology they have available to them.

  8. Technology has changed the lives of everyone in the world. Many companies and businesses use technology for day to day operations. From using ipads to scan credit cards to laptops for process workflow sheets, technology has made lives easier for everyone. The question is, does it make life easier in the classroom? As chalkboards get replace by interactive boards and books get replaced by ipads, the technological changes in the school system has made life easier for students and teachers. But does technology take away from basic skills like hand writing or social interaction? Those are questions that need to be answered.

  9. I agree with many of these comments about the importance of technology in the classroom. With all the advancements we have been seeing nowadays technology is vital in the growth of student learning. Students are exposed to technology everywhere they go and should have the ability and tools necessary in order to know how to use it. Technology certainly enhances the classroom environment and enriches the students learning. There are many forms of technology which was also mentioned in your blog and I think that this is particularly important because we have different kinds of learners in a classroom and this allows for all learners to be reached just with a little tweak of the form of technology. Another key component that really appeals to me is the fact that your classroom can now become more interactive and allows students to socialize and work together in new and exciting ways. These students will one day go out into the world to find jobs where technology is all over the place and we want them to be prepared, the classroom is the first step towards that preparation.

  10. I think that we are all on the same page with technology being a great asset in the classroom. I also believe that Jaclyn hit the nail on the head when she stated " These students will one day go out into the world to find jobs where technology is all over the place and we want them to be prepared, the classroom is the first step towards that preparation." Our schools are designed to prepare our youth for the "real world". Companies are competing against each other and bringing in newer and better technology that our students will be expected to learn how to use. If we don't show them how to use the technology available to us as well as demonstrate problem shooting when necessary the students won't be able to learn the newer systems with the same ease. It also lends a great hand in the science classroom where the students can see the labs before they have to complete them to better prepare them.

  11. I agree with a lot of the comments on this post. I think that incorporating technology into students every day classroom experiences is crucial. I think students rely on technology these days. In my classroom today I was discussing reading logs with my class and I asked for a show of hands who had an ipad or kindle, etc. and every single one of my students hands went up. It's is incredible to me. I love the use of technology in the classroom, I think it really brings the lessons to life and makes it easier for students to connect to what they are learning. Nothing excites my students more than when I call them up to do something on the SmartBoard. They love it. They look forward to it, so I try and do it as much as I can throughout the day. The things we can do on SmartBoards are absolutely amazing. It makes teaching and learning both easier.

  12. I agree with all of the posts that everybody commented on and how technology is changing the world. Technology has advanced so much over the years and is a huge part of a teacher’s world. The use of technology in the classroom gets the kids interactive with their peers and helps them absorb the information. Kids with special needs benefit greatly from all the new technology, it helps them succeed to there fullest. Teachers need to be better educated with technology and the use of the Smartboards and ipad applications to help the kids get the most out of it. I am currently not in a classroom yet but would like to be able to learn the various ways of integrating technology into the classroom to help better educate my students.

  13. I agree with everyone in the previous posts. Technology is changing everyday. I feel sometimes its hard to keep up. I agree that i am always looking for technology to make my life a little easier with my lesson. In my class we use different technology each day. We use the smartboard daily. My students enjoy using the smartboard. It keeps them engaged with the lesson. I have noticed that my students with special needs retain more information when they learn with technology. I am always looking for new ways to engage my students with technology.

  14. I feel as though everyone here has the same idea about technology. Teaching our students with technology will not only benefit us but also our students. As teachers using technology will help our students learn whether it be visual, audio, or hands on all at one time. You are able to find out information at speed of light. As a child of the 90's computers were just coming into schools. All students including myself want to find answers quickly and learn the best way possible. Now that students can use their own computer at school or use a smart board they are willing to volunteer and be part of the lesson. The more we incorporate our students with our lessons the more they will listen and learn. Teachers will also be able to make lessons where students can work one on one or in a group. This will help students become social with one another as well as helping one another throughout the lesson and hopefully within the school year.
